Enzo Maresca has just completed his post-match press conference after Chelsea's resounding 5-1 victory over Ajax in the Champions League.
The Dutch side were reduced to 10 men very early on when Kenneth Taylor was sent off for a high tackle on Facundo Buonanotte. And it did not take the Blues long to take advantage of having an extra man when Marc Guiu scored from close range in front of the Shed End.
Goals from Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez, Estevao Willian and Tyrique George ensured a comfortable three points for Chelsea, whose only gripe will be Wout Weghorst scoring a penalty that was gifted to him by a silly Tosin Adarabioyo foul. Maresca has just spoke to the media post-match and here is every word the Chelsea head coach had to say:
- Chelsea player ratings vs Ajax as Estevao shines in two 9/10s but 4/10 struggles
- 'Lucky' Estevao Willian admission speaks volumes as Enzo Maresca £282m Chelsea decision pays off
Chelsea became the first team to have three teenagers score in the Champions League. How proud are you of a team that young achieving that kind of result?
Very proud. It's a special night for the club, for the young players.
I think Guiu already scored for Chelsea five or six goals last year in the Conference [League]. Ty already scored also in the Premier League. Estevao, exactly the same. I think overall it was a great night, especially for these young players and for the club.
How important is it that the club constantly use young players and show that you will give them chances in big Champions League matches?
It's the strategy of the club. We have so many young players. I think already last season we were the youngest squad in the history of the Premier League, so this season we continue in the same way. We changed tonight from the Forest game, 10 players. It's not easy from the Premier League to the Champions League to change so many players, but we need to do that, otherwise they are going to struggle because of many games. We need to protect some of the players. Tonight I think was also good because we could rotate players, especially with the red card.
What does the win say about Chelsea's Champions League prospects?
We always say the same, but at the end it's because it's true. We go always game by game. I think tonight was good to win, to continue the momentum, but now in 48 hours we have one more game that is very demanding, Premier League game against Sunderland. I think it's good for everyone, for the club, but it's a win and personally it doesn't mean too much in terms of the season. It's just to continue to play games, to try to win, to try to improve players and this is the main thing.
What does that do for momentum and confidence, particularly as we've spoken about the young players?
Yeah, we need to continue on that, knowing that it's a tough game against Sunderland. They are doing very well, but we're going to try to prepare the game with the same intention that we had since day one, that is try to win the game and then we'll see.
What impressed you most about Estevao?
With young players, most of the time you are a little bit worried because they play one game, two games, good game, they score and they think that they are already top players. The good thing about Estevao is that we don't need to be worried about that because he's very humble, he's very polite, he wants to work hard. He has a fantastic family, they are very close to him. And for me personally, he's fantastic because he's a special player, but at the same time you don't have to be worried.
Now he's going to play one game, two games, score and he's already thinking that he knows how good he is. But the good thing is that he's a very simple guy, a simple boy.
You were puffing your cheeks after Estevao tried that overhead kick. How does it feel when your young players are trying those things?
Absolutely, I feel very lucky to be his manager because it's exciting, you can enjoy. We said many times, I think the fans at the end, they paid the tickets to see players like Cole [Palmer], like Estevao, this kind of player. So it's nice that we can have players like Estevao, like Cole, like them.
Are they kind of surprising you with what they're ready to try and do, these kids, at times?
I work with them every day, I know what they can do. I know also that we're going to have moments where we struggle a little bit more, for sure. But I think the good thing about them is that they want to learn, they want to improve and I think it's good.
