Jamie Carragher has pinpointed one major reason why he believes will end up signing a new contract at .

Salah is in the final year of his contract and will be able to negotiate with non-English clubs in January, but Carragher believes the forward will ultimately remain at Anfield in a bid to cement his legacy by breaking as many records as he can.

The 32-year-old moved up to join-ninth alongside Jermain Defoe on the list of all-time goalscorers with 162 goals after . Salah is just 13 goals behind seventh-placed Thierry Henry and 15 behind and believes he will want to finish even higher on that list.

"Of course they'll be talking about money and length of contract, but I think these are the things that really get the juices flowing for Mo Salah. He breaks all the records at Liverpool, but getting as far as he can up those lists, I think that's a big part of his focus as a player."

Speaking back in September, Salah revealed that "nobody in the club has talked to me" about his future yet. "I was coming to the game, I was saying, 'look, it could be the last time'," he said after Liverpool's win over .

"Nobody in the club talked to me yet about contracts so I was just like, 'OK, I play my last season and see at the end of the season'. I feel I am free to play football – we will see what happens next year."

Salah is not the only key Liverpool player who could leave on a free transfer next summer, with captain Virgil van Dijk and vice-captain also out of contract at the end of the season.

And Liverpool boss has insisted the uncertainty surrounding the trio's future is not a distraction. "It's again the boring answer you are going to get from me as long as there is no news. We don't talk about contract situations here," Slot said last month.

"Is it a distraction? No, it isn't because I'm fully focused on the individuals and the team. They are part of the team and I'm trying to work with them in the best possible way to get the best out of them. It's not a distraction for me at all."
