UK motorists swap to buying cars without seeing them first - 8 tips to get the best deal

A quarter of British have bought a without viewing it in person first.

This is up from 21% last year, said AA Cars, which compiled the latest research. AA Cars said 48% of had bought new cars unseen from dealerships, while 44% purchased used motors through dealers or online platforms. Just 6% bought a without seeing it in person from a private seller and 2% did so from an auction.

The survey also found 44% of those who bought a vehicle unseen felt confident enough to do so with a warranty, while a similar proportion, 43%, were reassured in buying from a well-known national dealership or platform. Over a third, 35%, of car buyers would be more inclined to purchase a vehicle online if it featured high-quality photographs. This rises to 65% of drivers aged 18 to 35, showing the importance of premium visual content for attracting younger buyers.

James Hosking, director of AA Cars, said: “More consumers are now growing confident in purchasing cars online. Shopping online offers greater convenience and access to a wider variety of options, without the need to visit multiple forecourts. To make sure you feel secure when buying a car you haven’t seen in person, it’s important to look for dealers that offer high-quality photos and videos, warranties, and return guarantees.

“Choosing a vehicle that’s been inspected by a trusted, independent organisation like AA Cars can also give you extra peace of mind. This seal of approval ensures the car is in good condition, helping you feel confident in your purchase.”

1. Do plenty of research beforehand: Find out as much information about a car in advance of a purchase by reading reviews, buyer guides and watching videos.

2. Check the vehicle’s history online: Use the government’s free MOT history checker and consider paying for a vehicle history check often known as a HPI check.

3. Consider the dealer’s reputation: Have a good look at the firm’s website, online review and social media, as well as their name on Companies House.

4. Ask for photos and video: Call and speak to the seller and ask for as many photos and videos as possible and ideally include do a video call where you can see the vehicle.

5. Be aware of cars that seem too cheap: If something seems too good to be true, it usually is, the car may have a serious defect or it could be fraudulently advertised.

6. Make sure the car comes with a warranty and return guarantee. When buying a car unseen it’s even more important to have a guarantee or warranty in place - many online sellers now offer a 14-day money back guarantee.

7. Have an independent, professional inspection done: This is a good way to check the car is up to standard before purchasing - the AA’s offers a 206-point check including a photographic report and a detailed physical and mechanical inspection.

8. Getting the car delivered: Think about how you are going to get, if you’re buying locally it shouldn’t be too costly to have it delivered but if it’s further afield choose an affordable delivery service to keep costs down.
