What is the connection between The Conjuring and Marvel Cinematic Universe?

In a juicy new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, New Line Cinema’s president Richard Brener dropped the kind of cryptic-yet-thrilling bombshell that would make even Annabelle blink twice. While talking about the highly anticipated The Conjuring: Last Rites, he casually mentioned that this film would be the conclusion of “Phase One” of The Conjuring Universe. Excuse us—phase WHAT?!

Is The Conjuring building a horror Marvel Cinematic Universe?

You heard that right. The paranormal party that started with The Conjuring in 2013 has apparently been building its own horror-style cinematic multiverse. Just like the Marvel Cinematic Universe has Iron Man kicking things off and Avengers wrapping up sagas, The Conjuring Universe has been laying the groundwork with creepy entries like the Annabelle trilogy, The Nun films, and three installments of The Conjuring itself. And now? Last Rites is the terrifying cherry on top of what might be horror’s own Infinity Saga.

So what do we know about this climactic film? First of all, yes—our favourite ghost-hunting couple is back. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga return as Ed and Lorraine Warren in what is reportedly a direct sequel to The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021). Also stepping into the (haunted) spotlight: Mia Tomlinson as their daughter Judy, and Ben Hardy as Judy’s boyfriend Tony Spera. The film drops on 5th September 2025, and no, the case it is based on has not been revealed yet. That mystery alone is enough to keep fans obsessing until opening night.

The Conjuring: Last Rites release date

Now, here is the part that made fans collectively lose it—Brener apparently told the outlet that despite being in an early director’s cut stage with basic visual effects, Last Rites is “testing through the roof.” Translation? It is slaying at screenings. Not bad for a film that is not even finished yet.

According to sources close to the studio, the success of Last Rites could determine whether “Phase Two” of this dark cinematic multiverse gets the greenlight. And if Marvel has taught us anything, it is that where there is a phase, there is a masterplan. Imagine a horror Avengers-style team-up of all the cursed objects, haunted souls, and vengeful spirits in The Conjuring Universe. Annabelle leading the charge like some unholy Captain America? Sister Irene and Lorraine Warren bonding over holy water? We need it.

While Brener stayed vague about what Phase Two could look like, insiders hint that multiple projects are already brewing behind the scenes. Nothing is confirmed yet, but horror Twitter is already theorising faster than WandaVision fans did in 2021. Spin-offs? Origin stories? Maybe even a possessed post-credits scene? Count us in.

The Conjuring: Last Rites

Until then, all eyes are on Last Rites. Whether it slams the door on the current saga or creaks open a new one, one thing is clear: The Conjuring Universe is no longer just a series of spooky tales. It is a genre-defining empire with big Marvel energy—and it is only just beginning to haunt.
