Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati called for unity among all political parties in support of the government’s actions regarding the recent terror attack in Pahalgam. Her remarks come as Congress also cautioned its leaders to toe the party line and avoid unnecessary comments that could lead to confusion during a national crisis.
In her statement, Mayawati emphasized that instead of engaging in “dirty politics” by issuing statements or displaying posters, political parties should focus on supporting the government’s steps to address the attack. She expressed concerns that such divisive actions were harming the country’s unity during a critical time. Her message was clear: unity in the face of terrorism is vital, and political opportunism should be avoided.
Mayawati also added a strong warning regarding the respect for Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution, stating that any disrespect towards him would not be tolerated. She specifically called out the Samajwadi Party (SP) and Congress, urging them to act responsibly. Mayawati suggested that if these parties fail to show the necessary respect for Ambedkar, BSP might take to the streets to protest their actions.
Congress issues caution to its leaders
Mayawati’s comments come amidst heightened internal focus within Congress over its messaging surrounding the attack. The party has issued a directive to its leaders, asking them to maintain discipline and avoid speaking out of line. The party cautioned that any deviation from this directive could result in disciplinary action. The Congress leadership’s concern centers on maintaining a consistent narrative in public communications to avoid giving any impression of disunity or confusion.
In line with this, Congress deleted a controversial social media post that had depicted Prime Minister Narendra Modi as “missing in action” during the crisis. The post, which was criticized by the BJP for allegedly inciting divisiveness, was promptly removed after facing backlash. A letter from AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal to party functionaries urged them to show utmost discipline in their public statements, reinforcing that strict action would follow any violation of the party’s communication policy.
The growing political sensitivity surrounding the Pahalgam terror attack continues to shape discourse within political circles, with both Mayawati and Congress urging their respective parties to avoid political maneuvering in such times.
