In Bollywood, where tales of love, fame, and heartbreak are often played out on the silver screen, some real-life stories leave an emotional impact. One such story is that of actress Richa Sharma, the first wife of actor Sanjay Dutt. She was known for her simplicity and strength. Richa's journey from a promising film debut to a tragic end is both inspiring and heartbreaking. While many know Sanjay Dutt as a superstar who overcame personal struggles, fewer are familiar with the story of the woman who was by his side during a very turbulent time in his life.

Who is Richa Sharma?

Richa Sharma entered Bollywood in 1985 with Hum Naujawan, directed by the legendary Dev Anand and starred Tabu and Anupam Kher in key roles. She was only 14 when she met the filmmaker in New York and expressed her dream of becoming an actress. Years later, he kept his promise and launched her as a lead actress. Her career in films, however, was short-lived. Not long after her debut, Richa began dating Sanjay Dutt, who was already a popular actor at the time.

In 1987, Richa and Sanjay tied the knot. A year later, they welcomed their daughter Trishala Dutt. However, what should have been the beginning of a beautiful chapter turned tragic when Richa was diagnosed with a brain tumor. The situation felt even more painful because Sanjay had earlier lost his mother, Nargis, to cancer just before his debut film Rocky released in 1981.

Following in his father's footsteps, Sanjay took Richa to New York for treatment, hoping she would recover. But according to Indian Express report, he was very busy with his film career at the time, he couldn’t be by her side often. Meanwhile, rumours started spreading about Sanjay’s alleged relationship with his Khal Nayak co-star Madhuri Dixit.

Richa returned to India briefly in 1992 after being declared cancer-free, but the emotional distance between the couple had grown. Reports suggest that Sanjay did not come to receive her at the airport, and shortly after, Richa returned to New York with Trishala.

Their marriage ended in divorce, and soon after, Richa’s cancer relapsed. In a cruel twist of fate, Sanjay Dutt was imprisoned under TADA laws during the time of her final days, and was unable to be with her. Richa Sharma passed away on December 10, 1996, at just 32 years old.

Sanjay Dutt reunited with daughter Trishala

Following her death, Trishala was raised in the U.S. by Richa’s sister Ena and her maternal grandparents. Years later, in 2008, Sanjay Dutt reconnected with Trishala while filming abroad. Their bond slowly strengthened, and Trishala has often spoken warmly about her father in interviews.

According to the first edition of People magazine in India, Sanjay Dutt and his daughter Trishala shared an emotional reunion years after being apart. During their meeting, Sanjay expressed his affection for Trishala, recalling memories of his younger days. Trishala, on her part, spoke warmly about her father’s current life and expressed her support for his relationship with Maanayata.

Richa Sharma is remembered not only as an actress but also as a woman of grace, courage, and quiet strength.
