Delhi likely to see thunderstorms and rain today: Check full 7-day IMD forecast

Delhi woke up to a clear and sunny Saturday on April 12, 2025, with the morning temperature recorded at 19°C, two degrees below the usual average for this time of year. However, residents may need to keep their umbrellas ready, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted very light rain with thunderstorms and lightning later today.

Rain Today, Clear Skies Ahead
According to the latest forecast issued by IMD at 9:30 AM, Delhi is likely to experience partly cloudy skies and light rain today. Thunderstorms are also expected in some parts of the city. Residents are advised to stay indoors during these spells and secure windows and doors as a precaution.

From Sunday, 13 April, the weather will begin to clear up. The forecast for the next few days shows mostly clear or partly cloudy skies, with no rain expected. However, Delhiites may have to prepare for something more uncomfortable, a rise in temperature.

Temperature on the Rise
The daily maximum temperature, which stood between 34°C and 36°C today, is expected to gradually increase over the week. Here’s how the temperature will look over the coming days:

• 13 April: 37–39°C
• 14 April: 38–40°C
• 15 April onwards: 39–42°C

While the IMD has declared no heatwave conditions for the first few days, a heatwave warning has been issued from 16 April to 18 April, with maximum temperatures consistently staying between 40°C and 42°C.


What’s a Heatwave?
As per the IMD’s guidelines, a heatwave occurs when temperatures rise sharply above normal levels for several days. During this time, people are advised to:

• Stay hydrated
• Avoid going out in the afternoon
• Wear light cotton clothes
• Use sunscreen and carry an umbrella if stepping outdoors

Strong Winds Expected
Apart from the heat, strong surface winds are also forecasted for the second half of the week. From 15 April, Delhi will see wind speeds of 20–30 km/h, especially in the evenings. These winds, while offering slight relief, can stir up dust and make outdoor activities more uncomfortable.

The wind direction is mostly expected from the southeast (SE) during the early morning and late night hours, while southwest (SW) and northeast (NE) winds are expected occasionally during the day.
