The West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer’s office will conduct a crucial meeting with District Electoral Officers (DEOs), Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs), and Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) on Wednesday afternoon across West Bengal through video conferencing, ahead of the door-to-door visit of the Booth Level Officers (BLOs) with the enumeration forms starting from November 4.West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Agarwal and other top officials will conduct the meeting.
“The discussion will be undertaken regarding the status of pre-activities and further doables during SIR,” a senior official told ET. The meeting is crucial as it will chart out the path for the next steps in the SIR process with detailed guidelines for the DEOs, AEROs, and EROs.
According to ECI data, there are 24 DEOs, who are also District Magistrates, 3,353 AEROs/EROs, and 80,681 BLOs in the state. West Bengal has a total electoral base of 7.66 crore.
The next step in the process is BLO training, which will be completed by November 3, a day before the distribution of forms starts on November 4.
Meanwhile, in a major change in the enumeration form in Bengal, members of a family can sign in the absence of the elector when the BLO visits. This feature was not available in the Bihar enumeration form. The enumeration form will also include a QR code, which will be available in Bengal as well.
The voters’ list was frozen last night with the start of the SIR. Till December 9, while the SIR is carried out, no new names will be updated on the website. “SIR has started today in Bengal. BLO training will be completed by November 3.”
Meanwhile, West Bengal CEO Manoj Agarwal also pointed out that more Booth Level Agents (BLAs) should be deployed by political parties during the SIR process. The CEO informed political parties about this during yesterday’s all-party meeting as well. Around 18,114 Booth Level Agents (BLAs) have been appointed by political parties. BLAs can also submit up to 50 enumeration forms and accompany the BLOs during the house-to-house enumeration process of the SIR.
“We have urged the political parties to provide more and more BLAs, as the BLAs can submit up to 50 forms,” the WB-CEO noted.
According to ECI norms, a BLO has to be a voter of the same part and constituency. In most cases, a BLO knows the local people. The exercise is a three-month-long process, and there are around 950 voters per booth. The BLOs can easily cover their areas, and their app, the ECI app, will show a green light once the matching is done, sources said.
