A-to-Z: Keeping romance fresh, one letter at a time

Send Push
Started as a New Year’s resolution to make weekends memorable, Gurgaon-based Vaibhav and Shweta Chadha think theme-based dates like ‘ alphabet dating ’ bring variety and excitement to their relationship. Vaibhav shares, “It helped us discover more about what makes each other happy, our hidden creative sides, and how much we enjoy little adventures together. It’s been a great way to bond on a deeper level.”
Similarly, Bangalore-based Revathi Krishnamurthy shares that she and her partner believe in gifting each other experiences over material gifts. “We are always looking for unique things to explore, and that’s how we discovered these alphabet experiences.”
According to experts, such themed dates break the ice, making connections feel more effortless.

WHAT’S ALPHABET DATING
Alphabet Dating is a playful way for couples to plan unique dates based on each letter of the alphabet — ‘A’ for Aquarium, ‘B’ for Bowling, all the way to ‘Z’. It’s an exciting way to try new experiences together, strengthen their bond, and keep the spark alive.
“This trend aligns with the ‘Micromance’ trend for 2025, in which couples prioritise small, meaningful experiences over extravagant outings,” says Ruchi Ruuh, relationship expert .

WHY COUPLES ARE TRYING THIS
Adding spontaneity to the relationship
According to Revathi, their favourite so far has been a ‘movie under the stars’ date. She says they watched a film in a beautiful outdoor setup under the stars, accompanied by dinner. She shares, “It has helped us realise how differently we approach planning and spontaneity.”

Experts say spontaneity keeps emotional chemistry alive through impromptu getaways, surprise notes, or switching date nights.
“Spontaneity doesn’t have to be grand — micro-spontaneity can boost relationship satisfaction. These small surprises subtly rewire the bond and keeping the connection fresh,” explains, Dr Chandni Tugnait, relationship expert at Tinder in India.

Breaking down barrier
“Theme-based dating breaks barriers, fostering comfort and genuine interactions. It shifts connections from online to real-world adventures, letting couples explore compatibility through shared experiences. These creative dates deepen bonds, making the journey from first meeting to a potential relationship more natural and exciting,” says Chandni Gaglani, head of Aisle Network.

Helps struggling couples to reconnect
Alphabet dating can help struggling couples reconnect by providing a structured yet playful way to bridge emotional distance, says an expert. “Committing to intentional time together allows partners to rediscover shared joy, often lost in daily stress. With 1 in 3 singles valuing small gestures, this creative approach can rekindle a connection,” says Ruuh adding, “However, deeper issues may still require more direct resolution beyond themed dates.”

SINGLES BOND OVER EXPERIENTIAL DATES
Gen Z and young millennials love themed dating trends like Alphabet Dating, valuing creativity and personal expression. “Experience-based dates — such as Sip and Paint workshops, Wine and Cheese evenings, and Stargazing Jam Sessions — offer a fun, low-pressure way to connect. These curated experiences are especially popular in metro cities, where singles seek more intentional and engaging meetups. By going beyond traditional dates, they allow individuals to showcase their personality and interests in a relaxed, meaningful setting,” says Gaglani.

- 85% of Indian users want to break away from conventional dating norms, embracing authenticity and spontaneity
- Singles are prioritising sweaty hike dates ( 40%), pottery classes ( 34%), and vintage shopping that turns into a playful fashion show, as per Tinder’s Year in Swipe 2024 report
- As per Bumble’s research study, around 61% of single Indian women find micro-moments more meaningful than grand gestures

How to make Alphabet Dating uniquely yours
- Plan dates around inside jokes
- Recreate meaningful moments, such as your first date under ‘F’ for First Date Redux or revisiting old spots under ‘M’ for Memory Lane
- Align with shared interests—if you love music, ‘J’ could be jazz night or ‘V’ a vinyl hunt. Over half of young daters say a shared music taste enhances attraction
- Take turns selecting letters to ensure both partners contribute to the experience
- Ease into it with low-pressure activities like a board game night or a cosy takeaway dinner
- Mix budget-friendly outings, such as a park stroll, with a special dinner to keep things affordable
