Are you someone who loves adding cheese to each and every dish they savor, from cheesy snacks to cheese-loaded desserts? Your love for cheese may leave you addicted! Read on to find out…
Love for cheese
There’s no denying that the mere addition of cheese can trigger happy hormones and make any delicacy more palatable, but did you know that this love for cheese can also trigger the same part of the brain as hard drugs? As per a study, it was found that cheese contains the same chemical found in addictive hard drugs.
Is cheese really addictive?
As per a study conducted by the Yale Food Addiction Scale, which was designed to measure an individual’s dependence on certain foods and drinks, scientists observed that cheese is one such common food, which showed potent results of dependence due to the presence of a chemical compound known as casein in cheese . In fact, the team of scientists also pointed out why certain foods are more impactful and addictive for the human mind.
What is casein?
Casein is a substance that is extensively found in almost all types of cheese and other dairy products. In fact, as per this research, it was found that the presence of this compound can actually trigger the brain’s opioid receptors, which are linked to addiction.
The study was also conducted on other foods, and the authors also observed that processed foods were more linked to causing the addictive behavior in individuals, especially dairy-based and fatty foods. This is why it is tough for many people to quit the addiction to these foods. This report raised major concerns around processed foods containing cheese, as they were top-ranking foods on the addiction scale as per the study.
About the study
As per a digital daily, TechTimes, it was mentioned that the researchers observed and asked 120 undergraduates to answer the Yale Food Addiction Scale and were asked to choose between 35 foods of varying nutritional value.
Moreover, as a second part of the study, experts involved studied a sample of 384 people who were presented with the same items of food but in a hierarchical linear order, as mentioned in the daily.
Food addiction
While addiction to food may have several layers that are yet to be unfolded, as per this research, it was found that highly processed foods like cheese may trigger more brain receptors like hard drugs. In fact, the researchers behind the study published in the Public Library of Science One journal established that fat was linked to problematic eating whether or not participants were addicted to food.
As per another new report published in the digital daily, Independent, Erica Schulte, one of the authors of the study, shared that “Fat seemed to be equally predictive of problematic eating for everyone, regardless of whether they experience symptoms of 'food addiction.
Another Cameron Wells, a registered dietician, told Tech Times that the highly addictive nature of cheese may also depend on ”casomorphins that really play with the dopamine receptors and trigger that addictive element in the brain.”
