Vishu celebrations in Navi Mumbai were marked by a grand culinary experience as over 100 Malayalees gathered at Kerala Bhavan to enjoy the festive Vishu Sadya. The Bhavan pulled out all the stops, prepared an impressive spread of 21 traditional dishes, which was relished by the families that arrived at the Bhavan to welcome the Malayalee New Year.
The aroma of Kerala-style curries, crispy banana chips, and sweet payasams filled the air as people sat down to savour the Sadya served on banana leaves. The atmosphere at Kerala Bhavan was lively, with families and friends sharing stories, laughter, and the joy of community. " Having Sadya is an experience which takes us back to our childhood. We make it a point to come to the Bhavan and have the spread and many times we even bring our neighbors just to have a feel about the traditional way of celebrating the festival," said Vanita Nair, a resident from Nerul.
Likewise, many Malayalee families across Navi Mumbai celebrated the festival within their homes, preparing their own versions of the Sadya and performing traditional Vishu rituals like Vishukkani and giving Vishukkaineetam to younger family members.
"Morning begins by offering our prayers to the deity and one ritual is to ensure that the first sight seen is of the God. Following this each one of us got busy with the preparation of making Sadya. We invited friends and had an amazing time," said Anu Das, a resident of Belapur.
Adding to the festive calendar, Nair Samaj will also be hosting a Vishu Sadya next week, offering another chance for the community to come together and celebrate with authentic flavours and cultural pride.
