Mumbai: A strike initiated by drivers of app-based cab booking services like Ola, Uber, and Rapido is causing delays and disruptions in bookings for commuters. The drivers are requesting increased fares, decreased commission fees, and government intervention, leading to a notable decrease in the number of cabs available, particularly around Mumbai Airport.
Travellers encounter increased wait durations and difficulties in locating transportation options. Extra Transport Commissioner Bharat Kalaskar stated that discussions took place on Tuesday with leaders of the drivers' union and representatives from aggregators.

The objective is to analyse differences between app fares and RTO-sanctioned rate frameworks, especially in light of issues highlighted during the strike that started on July 9. Drivers are requesting the alignment of app-based fares with traditional taxi rates, a prohibition on bike taxis, restrictions on permits for cabs and rickshaws, the establishment of a welfare board for gig drivers, and the enforcement of the Maharashtra Gig Workers' Act.
There is a notable fare difference, as app-based charges frequently lower RTO-sanctioned rates; for instance, a 10 km trip priced at roughly ₹250 according to RTO standards is about ₹175 on Uber. This pricing dispute is intensified by surge pricing in busy hours.

The strike significantly impacts airport travel, causing extensive delays and reduced cab availability. As a result, numerous travelers are looking for different ways to travel to cope with the disruption, causing increased congestion in already strained local transport systems.
