Goa tiatr review: 'Zon'var' explores human instincts and family turmoil

Jose/Evon’s winter release, Zon’var, focuses on the animal instinct that is present in human beings. Sometimes, it comes to the fore, destroying man’s dignity to live, and tarnishing the image of society at large.

In this tiatr, the curtains unfold to a scene wherein Vicky (Jose) is imprisoned for molestation. Unfortunately, he has no fear or shame as he well knows he will be out on bail soon.

His father Futsal (Anyv) is an influential and equally corrupt man and will do anything to protect his spoilt brat.

There’s inspector D’Silva (Evon) at the police station with two constables, namely Janu () and Anu (Oswin), who assist her. D’Silva is upright, performs her duties diligently and will not tolerate any sort of mischief or foul play.

On the other hand, there’s Victor (Joe) residing with his aged mother (Betty Naz) and his wife, Gloria (Flacksy). Quero (comedian Querobin) serves as a maid in the house.

There are constant conflicts between the daughter-in-law and mother-in-law, and Victor comes along as a mediator. Sometimes, verbal conflicts in the family escalate into abuse.

MUSIC TO THE EARS: There are plenty of good songs in the tiatr, 'Zon’var'.

Out of frustration, Gloria (seeks divorce from her husband, but her mother-in-law steps in and tries to pacify her. On the sly, Gloria is also indulging in extra-marital ties.

For his misdeeds, every time Vicky is arrested and imprisoned by inspector D’Silva, his father bails him out, and he continues his notorious activities. Unable to bear the beatings from the inspector when imprisoned, Vicky threatens PI D’Silva, one fine day.

Once out of prison, Vicky with the assistance of his corrupt father, plays mischief with D’Silva’s only daughter, Natasha (Casiphia). Will Vicky get the punishment he deserves for his misdeeds? What is the fate of Vicky and his father in the end?

BEHIND THE SCENES

This time, Jose/Evon has roped in noted artistes of the Konkani stage, Betty Naz from Mumbai and comedienne , who has returned for good from abroad. The former wins the hearts of the audience by enacting the role of an aged mother, while the latter continues to amuse the audience as a maid in the house.

As a cruel daughter-in-law, Flacksy is good in her negative character. Joe extends good support to the cast.

As a police inspector, Evon comes out tough in her dialogues and body language, while Jose, playing a villain, is in command. Anyv is equally good in extending support to the villain.

as Janu, Oswin as Anu and Quiton as Salvador are entertaining with a good dose of laughter pills under their sleeves. Arnald, Casiphia, Roger, Dansten and Tony extend good support to the main cast.

In the music section, there’s Evon and Flacksy for the opening song. Solos follow from Jose, Betty Naz, Joe, Querobin, Casiphia and Dansten. Other songs are rendered by Querobin and Flacksy; Jose and Evon; Stancio, Arnaldo and Joe; Anyv, Tony, Joe and Dansten.

Music has been provided by (first trumpet) and his musical team of Mack (second trumpet), Alroy (saxophone), Claron (keyboard), Mario (bass), Joylen (drums). The musicians offstage are entertaining and provide good live music.

The stage sets are by Pedro Santan, and Dinesh has handled the light effects effectively. There are quite a number of scenes to be enjoyed in the drama.
