Recycling plant worker crushed to death after colleague makes terrible mistake

An engineer was tragically crushed to death after his colleague wrongly pressed a machine button in a freak workplace accident.

Mechanic Soner Altun, 26, had climbed into the sorting machine in Ordu, in northern , after turning it off so he could carry out a repair on April 11. But he became trapped in between the rollers and conveyor belts when his co-worker turned the machine back on. Emergency services rushed to the recycling plant and discovered his crushed stuck in the equipment. Despite their best efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ordu Mayor Mehmet Hilmi Guler paid tribute on social media and said: "We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of our dear colleague Soner Altun, who passed away as a result of a terrible . We pray for God’s mercy upon him and extend our heartfelt condolences and patience to his family, loved ones, and all our colleagues. May his soul rest in peace and his place be in paradise."

Over in the UK, an industrial worker was killed by a forklift truck in in September. The victim, aged in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene after he became trapped under the truck. An ambulance service spokeswoman said at the time: "We were called to an industrial incident on Station Road at 10.11am, two ambulances and a paramedic officer attended the scene. On arrival we discovered one patient, a man. Sadly,and he was confirmed dead at the scene."

Police said in a statement: "We were called to reports of a man trapped under a forklift truck at a premises on Station Road, at around 10.14am this morning. A man believed to be his 50s was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. Enquiries to establish exactly what happened are ongoing and the Health and Safety Executive has been informed."
