In the 1990s, comedy dramas centered around the concept of two wives or wife-wife rivalries were hugely popular. Govinda was the king of such films, and Aamir Khan had already established himself as a top star. Gharwali Baharwali’s music by Anu Malik, with lyrics from Dev Kohli, Nitin Raikwar, and Sameer, was a big hit, and its songs remain popular decades later.
Made on a budget of 5 crores—a significant amount in those days—the film earned a remarkable 15 crores at the box office, becoming the 17th highest grossing movie of 1998.
