OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is set to open its first office in New Delhi by the end of this year. The move marks a major step to strengthen its presence in one of the fastest-growing and most important technology markets in the world.
The company has already begun hiring for a dedicated local team that will focus on building strong relationships with government bodies, developers, businesses, educational institutions, and other partners in India.
India’s AI PotentialOpenAI CEO Sam Altman said that the excitement and opportunities for AI in India are “incredible.” According to him, India has all the right ingredients to become a global AI leader—from world-class developer talent to a vibrant tech ecosystem and strong government backing through initiatives like the IndiaAI Mission. Altman added that this office is a first step towards making advanced AI more accessible in India and reflects OpenAI’s commitment to building AI with and for India.
Government’s ResponseUnion Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw welcomed the move, calling it a reflection of India’s leadership in digital innovation and AI adoption. He said India’s investments in digital infrastructure, AI talent, and enterprise-level solutions position the country to drive the next wave of AI transformation. The Minister added that OpenAI’s presence will help extend the benefits of AI to every citizen of India.
