LONDON: Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential election on Wednesday caught many by surprise, with his securing more than the 270 electoral votes required. Now, the world anxiously awaits how his second term will impact international relations, as many of America’s allies have expressed concerns about potential instability.
In his victory speech, Trump promised to “put our country first” and vowed to lead America into a “golden age.” However, his first term was marked by tensions with longtime U.S. allies, a theme that seems set to continue with his return to the White House after losing to Joe Biden four years ago.
Trump’s victory could have wide-reaching consequences, particularly in areas like global trade, climate change, and ongoing international conflicts. He has made it clear that he intends to escalate the ongoing tariff dispute with China, America’s growing economic rival. In the Middle East, Trump has promised to end the Israel-Hamas-Hezbollah conflicts, though the specifics of how he plans to achieve this remain unclear. Another promise is to end the Russia-Ukraine war within 24 hours of taking office, a statement that has raised concerns in Ukraine and among its supporters, who worry that the deal might be more favorable to Russia.
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte congratulated Trump, expressing his eagerness to work together to “advance peace through strength” and address a range of global challenges, including the growing alliance between China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran. Trump had been a vocal critic of NATO during his first term, repeatedly accusing member countries of not meeting defense spending targets. He also suggested that the U.S. might not come to the defense of NATO members who fail to meet those targets, calling on European countries to increase military spending and reduce their dependence on U.S. support. Some European leaders remain skeptical, fearing that Trump’s commitment to NATO may be lacking.
