While Meghan Markle may not enjoy widespread popularity in the UK, she is not the only royal bride to have experienced this, with Queen Camilla having received a similar treatment. When she first began publicly dating King Charles, when he was the Prince of Wales, Queen Camilla was met with a lot of hostility from the public, which often resulted in her being called harsh nicknames.
Although Camilla, 77, has shot up in popularity over recent years, the Queen was initially not a favourite Royal Family member among the public as a result of her affair with Charles during his marriage to Princess Diana. While some royal fans may still not be supportive of Her Majesty, she has managed to win over much of the public, especially since stepping up her royal duties and supporting the King following his cancer diagnosis last year. With Camilla now being loved by many, fans may wonder whether Meghan, 44, could have improved her own public image if she had stayed in the Firm, or even now, despite the fact her and Prince Harry quit royal duty in 2020.
However, one royal expert believes this is unlikely to be the case, as there is a stark difference between them.
Speaking on the podcast last year, expert Robert Jobson said that Camilla managed to change public perception as she never commented on the hate she has received, whereas Meghan has repeatedly spoken about it.
He said: "Through all of the bad times she had, [Camilla] never said a word. She never spoke publicly about anything.
"That's what's likeable about her. She's a very likeable person. She's got a great character and she's not looking for anybody to like her..."
He continued: "If Meghan spends her life worrying about whether she's liked or not invariably [she'll] end up disappointed because some people like you and some people don't, that's just the way it is.
"So can she turn herself around, Meghan in the UK? I doubt it, I doubt it."
Jobson also said that Camilla has not had "one complaint" about her increase in royal duties since her husband's cancer diagnosis last year and instead has simply got on with the job at hand.
It is believed this could have contributed to her growing popularity.
