Gerwyn Price has dismissed concerns over his dramatic weight loss, insisting he feels and looks better than ever. The former rugby player from Markham in the South Wales Valleys has shed three stone over the past six months, a transformation he credits for his return to form at the oche.
Price, who now tops the Players Championship Order of Merit after clinching four titles this season, revealed that he's swapped XL shirts for medium ones. He attributes this change to avoiding fast food after an event, opting instead to wait until the following morning to eat.
On Saturday morning, Price shared a topless mirror selfie from inside a Fitness Factory gym on his Instagram account. "Concerned about my weight loss?" the caption reads. "Well don't be, I feel and look better than ever."
His post follows comments from darts pundit Damian Vlottes and ex-world champion Vincent van der Voort, who critiqued his physique after seeing him at the European Championship in Dortmund. "I thought it was a kid in his shirt," Vlottes remarked.
"There's nothing left of him. You can't really comment when someone's overweight, so let's be respectful when someone's underweight too - but he's lost a huge amount."
Van der Voort chimed in: "He used to have a lot of muscle; he was massive. Now he looks like a kid! Pretty soon, he'll be getting beaten up by Bradley Brooks [the 25-year-old former world youth champion].
"He used to be so broad, always in the gym, but he's gone too far now, he really should put some weight back on - this isn't good. It's not that I'm worried about him - for all I care, he can lose even more - but it's meant as friendly advice.
"I'd tell him to eat a bit more. He owns a fish and chip shop, so that shouldn't be a problem!".
