believes that Ruben Amorim will be encouraged by what he has seen so far this season at Manchester United, despite their torrid run of form.
The Red Devils dug deep to hold on for a point at home to Chelsea over the weekend in a performance which lacked energy and a spark, leaving the Old Trafford outfit in 13th place after 10 matches played.
Erik ten Hag ultimately paid the price for his side's lacklustre opening to the campaign and Amorim is set to replace the Dutchman later this month, though Potter believes that the Sporting boss has reasons to be positive about his arrival at the Theatre of Dreams.
Speaking after the 1-1 draw against his former Chelsea side, Potter told Premier League Productions: "It is exciting for him. If he looks at the data it will show Man Utd have missed a lot of chances and when you get on the right side of that the goals are going in and it doesn't take a lot to turn things around positively.
"The bounces need to sustain itself to compete at the top of the Premier League. They need to get away from bounces and go to small progressions."
United have scored just nine goals so far this season despite creating 26 big chances, and Potter believes that the Red Devils are a clinical edge away from turning their campaign around and pushing up the table.
Amorim's playstyle will play a key role in whether United are more fruitful in front of goal as well, and ex-defender Gary Neville has publicly pleaded with the soon-to-be boss to implement an attack-minded system upon his arrival.
He told : "Job number one has got to be to stop this rot of players coming to Manchester United, who were fancied because other clubs wanted them as well and who have not been able to achieve the levels of potential they demonstrated before they signed.
"So, with the players he inherits - which he's going to be stuck with for the next eight months - he has to try and get the maximum out of them and that's going to be a big job."
"Man Utd played like a team that is sat behind the ball. 'Let's try and get them on the counter or score from a set piece'. That's got to change. You've got to be a team of dominance. And I mean dominance. I mean dominating the ball in the final third, dominating your forwards and staying high up the pitch."
