Hamilton was the fourth fastest during qualifying but was forced to start Sunday's race in P7 after being demoted for impeding Max Verstappen in Q1. The 40-year-old moved ahead of Racing Bulls star Isack Hadjar and Aston Martin ace Fernando Alonso during the race, however, to claim fifth place. But he finished 45 seconds behind the leaders, with ahead of Charles Leclerc and Oscar Piastri.
Tension appeared to be brewing between Hamilton and Adami towards the end of the race when the driver asked his engineer: "Are they still ahead by a minute?"
Adami explained to the seven-time world champion that the drivers ahead of him were simply "fighting."
And a frustrated Hamilton replied: "You're not answering the question. But it doesn't really matter, I'm just asking, am I a minute behind or...?" Adami eventually confirmed those at the front were "48 seconds" ahead.
After the race had ended, Hamilton attempted to make contact with his engineer over the team radio and was heard saying: "Are you upset with me?"
The blockbuster star didn't get a reply from Adami, although the Italian may have left the communication channel by that time.
Hamilton spoke to Sky Sports immediately after the race had come to an end and was quizzed about being told over the team radio: "Push now, this is our race."
as he insisted: "It wasn't very clear... the information wasn't that clear. I didn't really understand 'this is our race'.
"I didn't know what I was fighting for. Am I fighting for the next spot ahead? In actual fact when I look at the data I wasn't near anybody ahead. I used up my tyres a lot in that moment but I was so far away from them."
Ferrari chief Frederic Vasseur later dismissed any talk of underlying tensions between Hamilton and Adami as he stated: "When the driver is asking something between Turn 1 and Turn 3 we have to wait to reply to avoid to speak during the corners.
"It's not that we are sleeping, it's not that we are having a beer on the pit wall. It's just because we have a section of the track where we agreed before to speak with the drivers.
"Honestly it's not a tension that a guy is asking something. He is between the walls, he is under pressure, he's at 300kph between the walls and I am perfectly fine with it. When I spoke to him after the race he was not upset."
