The M6 has been closed southbound between J11 Laney Green Interchange (Wolverhampton A460) and J10 Bentley Interchange (Walsall A454) after a serious injury crash involving multiple vehicles.
West Midlands emergency services, including the police, fire service and ambulance service, are at the scene.
Traffic is being held, with an air ambulance also having been sent to the scene.
This comes after National Highways said two lanes of the motorway's northbound carriageway, further north, have been closed after an incident between junction 27 at Wigan and junction 28 at Leyland.
The road authority added that this closure is so "central reservation replacement works" can take place "after a collision early this morning".
