A handful of simple jobs can help make your garden a haven for robins and wrens in September, a gardening expert says. As arrives, gardeners across the country are making preparations to ensure their plots withstand the Winter and flourish in Spring next year.
But though temperatures will begin to drop in the weeks and months ahead, warm conditions will continue and there's plenty you can do to keep garden-friendly birds returning in September. Emma O'Neill, head gardener at sustainable gardening charity Garden Organic highlighted various ways of building an inviting environment for the avian creatures, so they can continue their vital role of targeting pests.
Asked for tips for attracting the Wrens and Robins in September, Ms O'Neill told Express.co.uk it's "relatively easy if they have the right habitat and food".
"Both are omnivores so they'll eat plants and animals - with robins favouring invertebrates and wrens eating all sorts or insects, spiders and worms," she explained.
The gardening guru highlighted four simple jobs you can try, including laying down log piles, which are an "easy way" to attract food sources.
She also suggests "leaving some wilder areas in your garden such as long grass or nettles".
Meanwhile, it's important garden birds have enough water for drinking and bathing, so she recommends topping up water dishes regularly.
"Clean daily to prevent disease and, if you have room, get a bird bath," she added.
Ms O'Neill says its also a good idea" to provide natural cover for these birds such as hedging, native shrubs and trees - if they have berries, even better!".
She stressed the importance of not using pesticides, as "they harm birds, bees and soil" and not just "'pests'".
