In a bold move that has sparked debate, the Pittsburgh Steelers under the guidance of head coach Mike Tomlin, have switched quarterbacks ahead of week seven, propelling them to a 5-2 record and raising their Super Bowl prospects.

Russell Wilson was brought in to replace Justin Fields following a strong offensive game against the Las Vegas Raiders where Fields and the team put up 32 points.

Despite Fields' success, Tomlin benched him in favour of a fully recovered Wilson, who had been sidelined by a hamstring injury.

The decision was met with criticism from several quarters, including Fox Sports' Terry Bradshaw, who expressed his disapproval: "I totally disagree with this decision by Mike Tomlin.

"I would stay with Fields. Fields fits this team's personality. They like to run the football. He's a big strong running quarterback, athletic enough, but also a guy that can move the football through the air. I don't understand the move."

Yet, Tomlin's gamble appears to have paid off as Wilson steered the Steelers to an outstanding offensive display, throwing three touchdowns, no interceptions, and amassing 264 yards.

While Fields had led the team to notable wins, it was predominantly the defense shining, with Fields not fully leveraging the talents of rising star receiver George Pickens who enjoyed his best performance of the season catching passes from Wilson.

Bradshaw was left red-faced after questioning the ambitions of the former Super Bowl champion, who had set his sights on clinching a Lombardi trophy with Pittsburgh, emulating Bradshaw's own legacy. The Steelers legend, now 76, won the Super Bowl four times during his tenure with the team.

Upon his March signing with the Steelers, Wilson explained to the press his reasons for joining and believes he can prove critics wrong, saying: "I wanted to be able to win championships with Coach Tomlin and these guys in the locker room. It's a great place to be grateful for the opportunity to be able to get after it and do what we came here to do. And that's to win football games.

"I come in with the mindset of just being the best version of me every day. I think that's always the plan. What we're trying to do is for me, I want to help our football team win. I think that's the job of the quarterback role is to help the Pittsburgh Steelers win and that's always been the goal every day. And so the goal is to get more trophies and to do everything we can to win."

Despite previous offensive woes, Wilson's arrival has bolstered the team's prospects, with their formidable defence providing a solid foundation. As they lead their division entering week 8, the Steelers are now tipped as playoff contenders this season.

Following their victory over the New York Jets in a prime-time showdown, the Steelers are set for another high-profile slot as they prepare to take on the New York Giants on Monday Night Football - presenting yet another opportunity to make a statement.
