A beautiful coastal town is hoping to bring back a beloved local attraction, partly to help encourage tourism. Clevedon is a seaside town in North Somerset, a popular day trip destination for known for its iconic Victorian pier.
The Grade I-listed structure dates back to back to 1860s and was described by British poet John Betjeman as "the most beautiful pier in England". The town is also the home one of the oldest purpose built cinemas in the world.
But the absence one of its historical treasures has been, a miniature electric steam locomotive that used to run on a railway around Salthouse Fields.
Known as Rio Grande, it began operating back in 1952 and "once offered rides to children and families but has been closed over recent years", according to North Somerset Council.
But the local authority is keen to restore the mini train in response to requests from residents.
It's launched an advert as it looks for an operator who can revive the attraction. "In addition to re-opening the railway, the lease for Salthouse Fields would see construction of a new train shed and the ongoing management of a permanent and accessible food and beverage site, miniature golf course and an area for children's activities," the council said in a press release.
Salthouse Fields is home to a skate park as well as "extensive childrens play areas, tennis courts, and a bowls club" according to Discover Clevedon.
The council says its also a base to begin walks into "surrounding woodland areas and along the coastal path, as well as access to open water swimming at Clevedon's marine lake".
Councillor Mike Solomon, the council's Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Open Spaces, said: "I'm pleased to say that North Somerset Council are putting the wheels in motion and hoping to get Clevedon's miniature railway back on track.
"The miniature railway is part of a great day out for residents and visitors alike and a fantastic draw to the local area, bringing smiles to family's faces and a boost to our local economy.
"Clevedon residents have told us how popular and important the miniature railway is and this a great example of the council listening to those voices, working with leisure providers and the voluntary and community sectors to ensure we deliver together for the benefit of our residents."
