'Adipurush' director Om Raut announces APJ Abdul Kalam biopic starring Dhanush, shares first look

Om Raut is set to make a comeback with his upcoming film 'Kalam: The Missile Man of India', a biopic on the life of the esteemed former President and aerospace scientist Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. The lead role will be played by Tamil cinema star Dhanush. This project marks Raut’s first venture after the commercial disappointment of 'Adipurush' in 2023. The film’s title poster was revealed on Wednesday night during the 78th Cannes Film Festival.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Om shared the first look and, "From Rameswaram to Rashtrapati Bhavan, the journey of a legend begins…India’s Missile Man is coming to the silver screen. Dream big. Rise higher. #KALAM - 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮."

Dhanush Expresses Gratitude

Dhanush re-shared the poster and wrote, "I feel truly blessed and deeply humbled to be portraying the life of such an inspirational and magnanimous leader — our very own Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam sir."

Om Raut on the Importance of the Film

In an official statement, Om stated, "In an era starved of true statesmen, Kalam stood above politics and pettiness. He was a man who was known for the power of education, excellence and indigenous innovation. To bring his story to screen is an artistic challenge and a moral and cultural responsibility. It’s a story that’s inspirational for global youth and especially the youth of the Global South. It's the most important experience of my life. His life is a lesson that is bound to connect with people no matter who they are and where they come from."

Background: The Failure of Adipurush

'Adipurush', with lead performances by Saif Ali Khan, Prabhas, Kriti Sanon, and Sunny Singh, was one of the most expensive films in Indian cinema. Despite its massive budget, the film underperformed at the box office and faced harsh criticism for its lackluster dialogues and disappointing visual effects.
