Punjabi superstar Gippy Grewal is all set to bring his latest film Akaal: The Unconquered to Hindi audiences in a big way. The film is a fictional story set in Punjab during the 1840s, following the death of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Gippy not only plays the titular role but also directs the film.

The film also stars Gippy’s 13-year-old son, Shinda Grewal, who plays his on-screen son as well. In an exclusive interview with ETimes, Gippy opened up about how he got Shinda to perform such impressive action sequences in the film.

“It was the easiest and most enjoyable part for Shinda,” Gippy said. “He’s been trained in horse riding since childhood, does parkour, and even trained in Gatka—a traditional Sikh martial art—for the film. Since he studies in Canada, we arranged for a trainer there, and he trained beautifully.”

“When he came here, he had learned various flips, but 2–3 of them couldn’t be used in the film. He was upset with the action director till the very end because he had been told those moves would be included. He had spent days practicing them. Our poor director had to explain that the flips didn’t fit the storyline. Shinda really put in a lot of effort” Gippy added.

In the same interview, Gippy also revealed that it was Aamir Khan who suggested releasing the film in Hindi. “He saw the trailer even before we had finalized the edit. He really liked it and praised it. While we were having breakfast, he suggested that I release it in Hindi as well. At that time, I had no such plans, but I already had an appointment with Dharma Productions that very evening—and what he said, happened,” Gippy shared.

Grewal also clarified that the film is not a biopic of Akali Nihang Sikh leader Akali Phula Singh Nihang. “Our story is a work of fiction inspired by the events of the 1840s, following the period after Maharaja Ranjit Singh. It reflects the conditions that prevailed in Punjab during that time, based on stories we’ve heard and been told,” he explained.

The film features an ensemble cast including Shinda Grewal, Nimrat Khaira, Niketan Dheer, Apinderdeep Singh, Gurpreet Ghuggi, and Mita Vashisht.
