BJP demands Kalyan Banerjee's suspension for outburst in Waqf meet; TMC MP targets JPC chief

Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee hit out at Joint parliamentary committee ( JPC ) chief and Bharatiya Janata Party MP Jagdambika Pal accusing him of being "driven solely by desire for power" as the BJP members wrote to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla demanding his immediate suspension. Amid the controversy over Banerjee losing his cool during a JPC meet on Waqf Bill , the TMC MP accused JPC chief of "not demonstrating fairness or impartiality in your important position".

"Having reached the age of 75, you have shifted your allegiance from @INCIndia to @BJP4India. Even now, you haven't demonstrated fairness or impartiality in your important position. You are neither a true member of @INCIndi nor a genuine supporter of @BJP4India; rather, you appear to be driven solely by a desire for power," Banerjee wrote on X.

"I urge you to conduct the remainder of your life with dignity and impartiality," he added.

Meanwhile, BJP has demanded Banerjee's immediate suspension from Lok Sabha, while the DMK, AIMIM, and AAP criticised committee chairman Jagdambika Pal for disclosing the proceedings of the meeting to the media.

Pal, however, has denied the opposition's allegations, stating that he had only made a statement to the media regarding the violent incident involving Banerjee during the Joint Committee on Waqf (Amendment) Bill meeting on Tuesday and Banerjee's subsequent suspension. "I have always adhered to the rules of parliamentary procedure and upheld the dignity of the House," Pal told PTI.

During the panel meeting on Tuesday, Banerjee allegedly smashed a glass bottle and threw it towards the Chair following a heated argument with BJP member Abhijit Gangopadhyay, a former high court judge. Banerjee sustained cuts on his fingers and received first aid.

DMK member A Raja and AAP member Sanjay Singh accused Pal of making the Committee's "confidential" deliberations public and questioned the fairness of the panel's proceedings. Raja, a former Union Minister, expressed doubts about securing justice due to the manner in which the meetings are conducted by the chairman.

BJP members Nishikant Dubey, Aparajita Sarangi, and Abhijit Gangopadhyay wrote to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, urging for Banerjee's immediate suspension from the House pending an investigation into the "unprecedented violence" during the parliamentary panel meeting. They argued that a one-day suspension from the Committee proceedings was a much lighter punishment and would not deter Banerjee from repeating such acts of hooliganism.

Pal defended the Committee's work, stating that it had held over 16 meetings and heard from more than 150 delegations, including the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) and Jamait Ulema-e-Hind. He claimed that no JPC had gone into such detail to prepare its report and expressed his willingness to resign as Chairman if opposition members stated that he did not allow them to speak at the meeting.
