NEW DELHI: India's active Covid-19 cases have crossed the 2,700 mark, with Kerala leading in infection numbers, while Maharashtra and Delhi follow suit. Seven people have lost their lives across multiple states, with most deaths linked to underlying health conditions, as per state-wise data.
This increase occurs as the illness, which has resulted in millions of fatalities worldwide since 2020, shows signs of resurging.
Health Ministry data, updated till May 30, revealed that Kerala has documented 1,1147 infections with 227 new cases reported on May 29 whilst Maharashtra has 424 cases, Delhi 294, and Gujarat 223. The figures for Tamil Nadu stand at 148 cases, matching Karnataka's count, whilst West Bengal has registered 116 cases. With the data, the ttal number f active cases reached 2,710 cases.
According to the data, Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, and Delhi reported one death each while in Maharashtra till May 30, two deaths were reported.
Yesterday, the union minister for health and ayush Prataprao Jadhav said that the government has comprehensive measures in place to address any emerging situation.
"Both our central health department and the Ayush ministry are fully alert and closely monitoring the situation across all states. We have spoken with the respective health and Ayush secretaries, as well as other concerned ministers," Jadhav told ANI.
The minister confirmed that they have assessed the existing infrastructure established during previous Covid-19 waves and are taking necessary steps to address potential challenges.
"We've reviewed the infrastructure built during the earlier Covid waves, such as oxygen plants and ICU beds, and have already begun preparations. Our health systems are well-equipped and ready to handle any situation that may arise in response to Covid," he said.
