The Assam governor and the chief minister have promised a strong response to the ambush of Assam Rifles convoy in the state’s Bishnupur on Friday that killed two personnel and wounded five.
Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla termed the ambush a "heinous act of violence" that the security establishment would respond to appropriately. He said attempts to disrupt peace in the region would only strengthen the administration’s resolve to restore law and order.
Former CM N Biren Singh visited the injured Assam Rifles personnel and sought “the harshest punishment” for the perpetrators of the attack.
The last such militant ambush on central forces occurred in Jiribam district, near the border with Assam's Cachar district, in 2024, killing a CRPF trooper.
In Nov 2021, militants of the People's Liberation Army (PLAM) and Manipur Naga People’s Front attacked an Assam Rifles convoy in Churachandpur district, killing Col Viplav Tripathi, his wife and the couple’s six-year-old son, along with four personnel of the 46 Assam Rifles.
