Israeli entrepreneurs offer cash rewards to free Gaza hostages

After more than a year of October 7 attack by Palestine's Hamas that took 251 hostages, Israeli entrepreneurs have started offering financial rewards to free the remaining 97 hostages in Gaza.

Former SodaStream CEO Daniel Birnbaum declared on X that he would give $100,000 in cash or bitcoin to anyone who delivers a living Israeli prisoner from Gaza. His offer expires Wednesday at midnight.

Birnbaum reported receiving around 100 calls after his announcement. While many were pranks, threats, or curses, he said that '10 to 20 could be legitimate' and were passed on to Israeli authorities. He noted that most callers were more interested in escaping Gaza than the money.

"I'm not expecting to get everyone back (but) I'd be delighted if we got back just one hostage," Birnbaum said. He didn’t seek government permission, believing that financial rewards should come from the private sector.

With 34 deaths of hostages in Gaza, the attack in Israel led to a total of 1,206 deaths so far. Meanwhile, Israel’s retaliatory actions have resulted in over 42,603 deaths in Gaza.

Israeli-American real estate developer David Hager joined the effort by raising about $400,000. He appealed to other businessmen to help reach a $10 million goal. “There are IT guys here who have made huge sums, and this is small money for them,” he said on Israel's Channel 12.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Palestinians who lay down their weapons and return captives would be allowed to leave Gaza. Flyers dropped by the Israeli army also promised peace for those who return hostages.
