Far-right Israeli minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has claimed that top US Republican lawmakers privately endorsed a hardline military strategy in Gaza during a meeting at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate. The plan reportedly involves bombing key food and aid depots in Gaza to exert military and political pressure on Hamas.
Ben-Gvir made the statement in a social media post on Wednesday, revealing that he had met with senior Republican officials at the US president’s Florida estate. In his post, Ben-Gvir wrote that the lawmakers supported his position on Gaza, including bombing food and aid depots as part of a broader strategy to bring Israeli hostages home.
He wrote: "I had the honour and privilege of meeting with senior Republican Party officials at Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate. They expressed support for my very clear position on how to act in Gaza and that the food and aid depots should be bombed in order to create military and political pressure to bring our hostages home safely."
The post did not identify which Republicans were present, but according to Al Jazeera, Ben-Gvir’s office confirmed that Republican Congressman Tom Emmer, who holds one of the highest positions in the US House of Representatives, was at the meeting. Emmer has been a staunch supporter of Israel during the ongoing conflict with Gaza, often blaming Hamas for the civilian casualties in the region.
Ben-Gvir, a vocal advocate for harsher measures against Gaza, has previously called for the bombing of civilian infrastructure to force Hamas into submission.
