Tesla CEO Elon Musk has revealed his thoughts on how he would manage the proposed Department of Government Efficiency if appointed by Donald Trump. While addressing a town hall in Philadelphia, his first solo event rallying for Trump, Musk said that there is a need to address "staggering" waste within federal expenditures and that if funds are not used for the benefit of the American people then it's a "misuse of the funds". Musk was replying to a question about whether the US should stop funding "forever wars".
"I think in general the amount of waste that happens with the, with the federal government is really staggering. It's a staggering amount of waste of taxpayer money and if we're for any given expenditure we have to say well what does this do for the citizens of America?," the Tesla CEO questioned.
"Politicians seem to forget that the money being spent your money and if it's not spending being spent in a way that is beneficial to the american people it's a misuse of the funds," he added.
Musk's remarks comes after Trump's recent announcement that he would establish a government efficiency commission, led by Musk himself, should he win the election. The former president elaborated on his vision during a speech at the New York Economic Club, where he promised to conduct a comprehensive audit of federal spending to eliminate "fraud and improper payments." He said, “I will create a government efficiency commission tasked with conducting a complete financial and performance audit of the entire federal government.” Musk has expressed interest in this role, asserting on X, “I look forward to serving America if the opportunity arises. No pay, no title, no recognition is needed.”
This focus on efficiency resonates with Trump's long-standing critique of government waste and bureaucracy, echoing past initiatives like the Grace Commission established by Ronald Reagan.
